My favorite dessert in the fall is apple pie. I know many people love pumpkin pie, but not me! Every fall we go to a nearby church to buy apple pie. However, this year we were so busy that we did not get the chance. So I decided to make my own pie. I am not a fan of store-bought apple pies. I just don’t think they taste as good as homemade ones.
Today, I am going to share my apple crisp recipe with you. I know what you’re thinking. I thought you said you like pie? Lol. Well, I took the apple pie recipe because I love the cinnamon/sugar sauce mix with the apples. But since hubby requested apple crisp, I substituted crumb topping for the crust.
If you’d prefer a pie, just use a crust instead. Let’s get started.
Filling
Ingredients:
- ¼ stick unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons flour
- ½ white sugar
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- ¼ cup water
- 8 any baking apples – peeled, cored and sliced
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
- In the sauce pan, melt in butter and stir in flour to form a paste. Add the sugars and water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
- In a small bowl, mix together cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and lemon juice. Mix mixture over apples and toss until evenly coated.
- Put apples in a 10-inch baking dish. Add the sugar and butter mixture on top of the apples.
Topping
Ingredients:
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup cold butter
- ¾ cup flour
- ¾ cup quick-cooking rolled oats
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
Directions:
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle topping evenly over apples. Bake 50-55 minutes or until top is golden brown. This is best served with vanilla ice cream. 🙂
Do you have a favorite fall dessert? I’d love to hear from you.

Hi Keyosha! Thank you for your comment. That is very kind. Yes, I love the cinnamon smell 🙂 Have you tried making apple pie at home?
I actually haven’t but after seeing your blog post I would love to try doing that. I grew up watching my great grandmother bake desserts from scratch, and now I think I should carry on that tradition! Your Apple crisp looks so delicious! Thank you for posting!
You are quite welcome. Let me know how it turns out when you decide to make it. Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it.
