DIY Matte Christmas Ornament Using Baking Soda

DIY Baking Soda Ornament

This post is all about DIY Matte Christmas Ornament. Are looking for an easy and cheap Dollar Tree DIY Christmas ornament idea or recycling your old ornament? Keep reading and I will show you how.

Faux velvet ornaments are all the rage right now. I’ve been looking for velvet ornaments for a while with no luck. I went to Hobby Lobby, Walmart, and other stores and couldn’t find any velvet ornaments. A blogger said that Studio Mcgee sells it at Target but it’s sold old. Crazy, right?

I love how the velvet looks luxe and gives a Christmas tree a high-end look.

I’m all about high-end looks at an affordable price.

In fact, this blog is all about just that. I created this blog so people can create a beautiful home without having to pay for an arm and a leg. Because let’s face it, most people don’t have a lot of money to spend on expensive decor.

With the high cost of living, home decor is not a priority for most people. I completely understand because as a home blogger, food is our number priority and everything else is considered wants. For that reason, I like to do DIY crafts and projects using supplies from Dollar Tree, Walmart, or even thrift stores.

Amazon sells flocking velvet powder but it cost too much for my budget, lol. I am planning to do a separate tutorial if I can find a more affordable velvet powder. I’ll check if Hobby Lobby carries it.

For now, my cheap alternative solution is to paint the old ornament mix with baking soda to add texture.

DIY Neutral Ornament

This DIY matte or faux velvet or Christmas ornament is super easy and affordable.

To make these DIY Christmas ornaments.

You’ll need:

  • Old ornaments or Dollar Tree clear ornaments
  • Paint (bought from Walmart- lite mocha and nutmeg brown)
  • Foam brushes or any brush
  • baking soda
  • Dowels or skewers
  • Painter’s tape
  • Spray paint (optional)

Directions

  1. Take the ornament and remove the top part.
  2. Put the dowel or skewer in and tape it using painter’s tape.
  3. Mix baking soda with the paint. When the paint is dry, add another coat. It doesn’t have to look perfect so you can’t really mess it up, LOL.
  4. I spray paint the top part with metallic rose gold but you can use gold or any other metallic you prefer.
  5. Hang your new ornaments and enjoy!
