Do you have furniture which is dated and tired? Have you ever felt like you needed simple, low-cost update? In this post, I will show you how to transform your old furniture by using paint and stain.
One of my favorite pieces of furniture in the living room is the credenza. I painted it about 3 years ago and everybody liked it. However, my taste changes with trends. It was time for an update.
I love the white and wood combination. I’ve been seeing a lot of white trends lately and would like to incorporate them into my home.
I’ve been following Shea of Studio McGee who loves everything white. This bright and airy space is so calming and relaxing. I love the vacation-feel vibe.
I decided to paint the credenza white. This was a fairly easy DIY that took me only a couple of hours.

Supplies
- Electric Sander
- 60 grit sandpaper
- Goo gone
- White Paint
- Paint Roller
- high density foam roller
- Putty knife
- Citristrip stripping gel
- Polycrylic
- Rags
Directions
- Wipe and remove the handles, hardware and doors. It’s easier to paint when all the hardware’s removed.
- Apply Citristrip to the area you’re stripping and let it sit a few minutes. Do not let it dry or it will not work. You can cover it with plastic wrap if you want to prevent it from drying out.
- Using a putty knife, remove the paint. Take care to not damage the wood. The paint should come off easily.
- This left me with a sticky goo—and my least favorite part. I sprayed it with Goo gone and let it dry.
- Once it dried, I sanded using an electric sander for most of the work and by hand for some of it. I used 60 grit sandpaper.
Now I was ready to paint.
- I made sure everything was clean. I painted three coats allowing each to fully dry before doing the next.
- I left the wood unstained and unpainted. I wanted to see natural wood. I sealed everything, including the unstained wood with polycrylic.
- Screw the doors and hardware back on. That’s it!
I scored the art on the wall from Hobby Lobby for $7.99. That was 90% off its regular price.
It was an easy update that gave the living room a fresh, new look.
I love painting furniture because you get so much impact for not much effort!
