How I Updated Our Bathroom On A Budget (under $30)

Boho Bathroom Decor

Does your bathroom need updating or sprucing? In this post, I will share how I updated our bathroom on the cheap.

Our main bathroom gets the most used. My kids and I use it all the time. It’s also the bathroom for our guests. As you can see, it is a high-traffic room.

If you have kids, you know that it’s hard to keep a room clean with kids. There’s toilet paper on the floor or dried toothpaste on the countertop. Of course, there’s clutter everywhere. And don’t even ask about the closet, LOL.

We renovated the main bathroom ten years ago. It’s starting to show some wear and tear. Some of the grout is cracked and I recently regrout the shower floor tile (which was a ton of work). I scrubbed the grout and used so many grout-brightening products with no luck.

I finally decided to paint the tile grout. I used Mapei Grout Refresh and it turned it great. If you want to learn how I did it, you can check out my post here.

Painting Grout

A month ago, I replaced all the doorknobs with black. It was not a very easy project because our doorknobs were original to the house. However, I love how it instantly made our doors look updated.

I was going to paint some of the doors but hubby doesn’t like the idea. He prefers the wood look. I’m not a fan of the orangey wood look. One day, I might have to restain it with a different color stain.

How did I update our bathroom on the budget?

The first thing I changed is the shower curtain rod. It was rusty, so it was time to be replaced. I got it from Homegoods for $20.

I want to incorporate more of the black theme so I decided to get a black shower curtain rod.

The second thing I bought is the black hooks. I got it from Hobby Lobby for about $7. I also bought these two things because I used all the decor I already own to decorate the bathroom.

The shower curtain was a thrift store find. I got it from Goodwill for $5 but originally from Target. I love the detail and the fringe on the bottom.

I cleaned and wiped the countertop and the floor. Then, I decluttered the counters and put everything out of sight. I can’t believe what a difference decluttering makes to a space.

Deorating bathroom

Think about it, when you go into a hotel room, everything is clean and clutter-free. A room without clutter makes us feel like on vacation. Our mind is calmer and more relaxed.

This is key if you want your home to feel like a retreat. I hate walking into a room with stuff everywhere. It makes me feel so stressed. I couldn’t wait to get out of that room.

Anyways, next, I added plants. I transplanted some of my pilea plants into a small pot. I already have an aloe vera plant and just moved it to the bathroom.

You can also use faux plants if your bathroom doesn’t get any natural light.

To add textures, I use a wicker basket, rug, and rattan pot (Goodwill find).

Shop the look

The key to saving money in decorating a room is to shop from your house first. I like to use what I already have before shopping for new decor.

I love to go to Goodwill to shop for home decor. It’s my favorite Thrift Store because I find lots of modern decor than any other thrift store. They now have a 50% off discount on a certain color every day.

Shopping at a yard sale is also my favorite way to find good deals.

Hobby Lobby is also a great store to find cheap home decor. They usually have 70-90% off their off-season decor. This is a perfect time to buy if you looking for any home decor at a cheap price.

I hope you learned something from this post. You don’t have to spend a ton of money to decorate or style your bathroom. Happy decorating!
