Do you need ideas on how to decorate your patio or deck for summer? In this post, I will show you how I style our patio using boho and coastal home decor. If you like neutral decor with modern touches, read on and I’ll show you how.
Summer is one of my favorite times of the year because it’s when people spend more time outdoors, enjoying the pleasant weather and sunshine. Patios provide a designated space where people can relax, socialize, and entertain guests without being confined indoors. They offer a seamless transition between the comfort of home and the beauty of nature, allowing people to enjoy the outdoors while still having access to amenities like seating, tables, and shade.
Summer is a time when nature is at its vibrant best, with blooming flowers, lush greenery, and pleasant weather. Patios allow people to immerse themselves in the natural environment, providing an opportunity to enjoy the sights, sounds, and fragrances of the season. Spending time on a patio can help foster a sense of tranquility and rejuvenation, creating a deeper connection with nature.
For summer, I wanted to create an outdoor space that is neutral and has a beachy or tropical vibe. Growing up in the Philippines, I am drawn to rattan or woven elements because they add warmth and texture to a space. I used a lot of neutrals and plants for a vacation vibe.

I love this outdoor furniture we got from Walmart last year. It is perfect for the look I’m going for. The only downside to white cushions is, they get dirty easily. I have to clean it often to keep it looking nice.
For this look, the first thing I did is to add neutral and coastal pillows. I got these pillow covers from Hobby Lobby but they no longer sell them. Amazon has similar pillow covers, I will add the link below.
I got the outdoor mat or rug from Amazon and I love how it adds the boho or global feel to my space. It’s also reversible, the other side is mostly black with tan accents. I like that it doesn’t get soaked or absorb water when it rains but the woven does get loose over time.
I added plants and a faux Olive tree to add greenery to the patio. I got the faux Olive tree from Amazon and I love how it looks so realistic. This gives my patio a Mediterranean-coastal vibe.
My family loves Alfresco dining in the summer. I love grilled food because it’s easy and delicious. I wish we can eat outdoors year-round. There’s something about the open-air ambiance that helps enhance the dining experience, making it more enjoyable and memorable.
To add to the global vibe, I made a super easy DIY pendant light. I saw this pendant light from Etsy but it was out of my budget.
So I decided to do a DIY pendant light. I got the rattan vase from Ross. When I saw it, I knew I could turn it into a light fixture.
Do you want to learn how I did it? Read on and I’ll show you how.
Supplies
- Rattan vase
- Raffia
- Wire cutter
- Jute twine
- Adhesive wall hooks (Command hooks)
Directions
The first thing I did is remove the bottom part using a wire cutter. This took a long time because I was so careful not to break the rattan.
Once the bottom part is removed, I used 3 pieces of raffia to tie a knot between the gaps. This was easy but tedious. I want the fringe to be long so I used the long pieces of raffia.
I gave the raffia a haircut to make it look straight.
Last but not least, I attached the command hook and hung the pendant light.
You may add a light bulb but I decided not to because it gets really windy on our deck. I am scared that the bulb might fall and break. Also, we don’t really sit outside when it’s dark.
